The project consists of a range of activities that enhance existing skills such as creativity and socialising to allow young people to acquire new skills and knowledge too. Additionally, our goal is to deliver a vast range of varied activities that will allow young people to increase their confidence, enhance their low self-esteem, develop their well-being and build their resilience.

Our sessions run from Blackburn Youth Zone, Jubilee Street, BB1 1EP:

YouThrive at Blackburn College

The project is designed to target 16 to 19-year-olds at Blackburn College, offering them the benefits of both group and one-on-one mentoring sessions. These sessions aim to bolster students’ mental and physical well-being, which is expected to lead to improved lifestyle choices. As a result, we anticipate seeing better attendance rates, increase academic achievement and enhance progression.

In collaboration with various curriculum departments within the College, the project will provide young people with comprehensive information on preventive measures and support mechanisms for mental health. This includes conducting awareness sessions across different curriculum areas, offering guidance, and teaching coping strategies to those with lower needs. For those requiring more intensive support, individualised one-on-one sessions will be available, (following group sessions and based on referrals from tutors).

Skill Start

Currently, one in eight young people in the UK are not in employment, education or training (NEET). This challenge is known to particularly affect young people with additional barriers to employment. This project is designed to target and support 16 to 24-year-olds who are facing these challenges. We will provide a series of workshops/ one-to-one sessions for individuals by providing them with the necessary skills and resources to secure employment. This program offers career counselling and mentoring. Additionally, the project collaborates with local organisations to showcase the wide range of opportunities available for the young people. By addressing barriers to employment, this project empowers NEET individuals to build confidence and achieve sustainable employment, ultimately contributing to their personal and professional growth.

Byte Size Basics

This programme has started, an inter-generational programme aimed at supporting those in the borough with a vast array of digital skills.

Blackburn with Darwen faces acute challenges with poverty and digital exclusion; two critical factors that perpetuate educational and social disparities. Across the borough, those from low-income households are significantly less likely to have adequate digital access and skills. Local research from Blackburn with Darwen Council and partners confirms that older adults, BAME residents, and families with limited incomes are burdened by poor connectivity and confidence in using online services

Rewrite The Game

This programme has started. This project will be open to girls and non-binary youth to step outside the box of traditional sports, embracing an exciting journey of self-discovery, mental resilience, barrier-breaking, and pure fun through movement. The main aim of the project would be for the youth to challenge their limits and defy stereotypes - just adventure, adrenaline and bold experiences.

Money Matters

This programme has started. This is a project which delivers money literacy education to the disadvantaged young people of Blackburn with Darwen. This will help to improve the financial resilience of YP in the borough. We aim to develop a sound understanding of budgeting and saving and goal setting with the idea of uplifting themselves out of the cycle of poverty, over time. Young people will be capable of critically assessing financial products and services, mitigating risk, saying no to things like predatory lending and scams and, ultimately, making informed choices about their money.

Financial literacy has emerged within our charity as a major need in recent years because of the cost-of-living crisis, which has pushed our young people much deeper into financial insecurity. Consequently, what we are seeing now on the frontline is a generation with increasingly limited access to important financial resources and increasing susceptibility to predatory lending, scams and risky financial behaviours such as gambling. We want to get to the root of the issue - at scale and by leveraging everything we have learnt to create an effective programme that builds sustainable financial capacities and capabilities.

YouThrive In Life

1. Partnership with Impetus
Who Impetus are: Impetus is a transformative NGO that has been reshaping the lives of young people from disadvantaged backgrounds. Their mission is to support young individuals to succeed academically, access university education, and secure employment. By providing long-term funding, expert investment teams, and a pro-bono network, they ensure charities they partner with deliver impactful outcomes.

How they are supporting us: Impetus supports IMO Charity through the funding of vital project aimed at empowering the youth. This partnership leverages Impetus’s robust network and financial assistance to enable the launch and sustainment of our youth employment programme.

How our partnership is looking: The alliance between IMO Charity and Impetus is a beacon of hope, poised to change the trajectory of young people's lives. By uniting our resources and expertise, we are jointly committed to nurturing the potential of young individuals. Impetus has carried out intense DI workshops to assist IMO in shaping our youth employability programme.

2. How We Are Forming Our Project
Our project is centred around the goal of aiding young people who have veered off course, by providing one-on-one mentorship and practical experience to bolster their opportunities for sustained Education, Employment, and Training (EET). In collaboration with Impetus, we are strategically planning and executing the project's formation to ensure alignment with IMO's overarching mission: to empower communities for an improved quality of life and resilience. Our endeavours focus on raising aspirations, enhancing health and wellbeing, and improving education and employability. Our organisational values—passion, respect, accountability, teamwork, knowledge, action, and a commitment to equality and diversity—guide us in this mission.

3. Successful Completion of First Pilot and Upcoming Second Pilot
We are excited to announce that our programme has successfully completed its first pilot phase. The results were highly promising, providing us with valuable insights and confirming the effectiveness of our approach in supporting underrepresented social groups, such as the South Asian community and pupils facing educational challenges. We directly engaged with schools during this phase to pinpoint and support students who would benefit the most from our programme. This targeted outreach ensured that our resources were channelled effectively, prioritising and focusing on those who needed support.

Building on this success, our second pilot launched in February 2025, engaging 50 young people in Year 9 and Year 10 across four local high schools in Blackburn with Darwen. This phase delivers tailored one-to-one mentoring designed to improve educational outcomes through personalised guidance and structured support. In addition, it offers opportunities for students to connect with local employers, helping them gain valuable insights into the world of work and broaden their career aspirations.
